A R T I S T S T A T E M E N T
I make art for people to live with. To enrich their lives as a unique
aesthetic experience. It is sculpture that is intended to be touched and
used, changed through wear, and ideally to play an active role in the life
of the participant.
The making of this work is an evolutionary process that starts with an idea of a general size and shape, the idea then evolves to take advantage of the character of the materials. The idea, very often, just serves as a reason to start, from there the work is far less predetermined and far more intuitive. Each piece seems to become what it wanted to be all along. I am simply the tool that allows it to get there. For me, it is analogous with taking a rock and finding the sculpture that is in there. This way of working allows me to achieve a level of intimacy with the material and the resulting work of art.
This interaction between the character of the material and the idea which is allowed to evolve, combined with my own sensibility, my education, the influence of other artists and the world around me are the fuel which brings life to each piece and hopefully serves to enrich the lives of those that experience it.
